Treasure Enchantments
Treasure enchantments never appear in the enchanting table. Java 26.3 has 7: you get them from villagers, loot, fishing or piglins.

The full list
| Enchantment | Max | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Curse of Binding | I | librarians, random chest loot and fishing |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | librarians, random chest loot and fishing |
| Frost Walker | II | librarians, random chest loot and fishing |
| Mending | I | librarians, trial chamber vaults, random chest loot and fishing |
| Soul Speed | III | bastion remnant chests, piglin bartering |
| Swift Sneak | III | ancient city chests |
| Wind Burst | III | ominous vaults (trial chambers) |
These sources are read from the game's loot tables and trade rules, so they match the current version exactly.
The rarest
Swift Sneak only drops from ancient city chests. Soul Speed only comes from piglins (bartering and bastion chests). Wind Burst only drops from ominous vaults. None of the three can be bought.
How to plan for treasure books
Treasure books decide what your final gear looks like, so get them first. Mending and Frost Walker can be bought from librarians, which is the easiest route. Soul Speed needs gold for piglin bartering, Swift Sneak needs trips into the deep dark, and Wind Burst needs ominous trial keys. Once you have them, the rest of the books can come from the enchanting table.
Add them to the boots, leggings and mace builds, then follow the cheapest order.
Treasure enchantments compared
Here is every non-curse treasure enchantment side by side: what it goes on, what the book costs on a fresh item, and what a librarian asks for the top level.
| Enchantment | Max | Goes on | Book cost on anvil | Librarian price (emeralds) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frost Walker | II | boots | 4 | 16–64 |
| Mending | I | anything with durability | 2 | 10–38 |
| Soul Speed | III | boots | 12 | can't buy |
| Swift Sneak | III | leggings | 12 | can't buy |
| Wind Burst | III | mace | 6 | can't buy |
The anvil does not charge extra for treasure books. Their cost comes from their multiplier like any other book. However, Swift Sneak and Soul Speed have a high multiplier, so each costs 12 levels at level III. Add them early in your anvil order.
Mending
Mending repairs equipped gear with the experience you pick up. It is the most wanted book in the game, and it is also the easiest treasure book to get. Librarians sell it for 10–38 emeralds plus a book, before discounts. It also comes from fishing, random chest loot and trial chamber vaults. Mending excludes Infinity on bows, but it fits with everything else. The full method is in how to get Mending.
Frost Walker
Frost Walker turns water under your feet into frosted ice, so you can walk across lakes and oceans. It also stops damage from magma blocks. Level II freezes a larger circle, which helps when you sprint. You can buy it from librarians, where it costs double like Mending: Frost Walker II runs 16–64 emeralds. Fishing and chest loot can give it too.
The catch is that it excludes Depth Strider. Most players keep Depth Strider on their main boots for fast swimming, and put Frost Walker on a second pair for travel. Compare them on Depth Strider vs Frost Walker. Frost Walker does work with Soul Speed, so a Nether travel pair can have both.
Soul Speed
Soul Speed makes you fast on soul sand and soul soil, and soul sand normally slows you to a crawl. That makes soul sand valleys and Nether highways far easier. Only piglins give it, so it needs a trip to the Nether.
How to get Soul Speed
- Barter: drop gold ingots near a piglin. It inspects the gold and throws back a random item. Soul Speed books and iron boots with Soul Speed are both in the barter list.
- Stay safe: wear at least one piece of gold armor, or piglins attack you. Never open chests or mine gold blocks near them.
- Loot bastions: bastion remnant chests can hold Soul Speed books. Bastions are dangerous, so bring good armor.
- Farm it: a gold farm plus a bartering setup gives a steady stream of books. Two Soul Speed II books merge into III.
Soul Speed boots lose durability while the speed boost is active, so pair them with Mending and Unbreaking. See the best boots enchantments for the full build.
Swift Sneak
Swift Sneak lets you move faster while sneaking. Level III brings you to 75% of walking speed while crouched, up from 30%. That is a huge help when you build on edges, sneak past the warden or bridge over lava.
It only drops from ancient city chests in the deep dark. No villager sells it, and you can't fish it up. When you raid an ancient city, sneak everywhere. Sneaking does not set off sculk sensors, so you avoid waking the warden. Avoid sculk shriekers, and bring blocks to wall yourself in if the warden does come.
Each ancient city has many chests, so one city can give you more than one Swift Sneak book. Merge two level II books for level III. Swift Sneak goes on leggings only, as part of the best leggings enchantments.
Wind Burst
Wind Burst launches you back into the air after a mace smash attack. That lets you chain one smash into the next without climbing back up. With Density, each smash hits harder the further you fall.
How to get Wind Burst
- Get an ominous bottle. Raid captains, the pillagers carrying a banner, drop them.
- Drink it to get Bad Omen, then walk into a trial chamber. The effect changes into Trial Omen.
- Beat the ominous spawners. With Trial Omen, nearby trial spawners turn ominous, spawn tougher waves and drop ominous trial keys.
- Open an ominous vault with the key. Wind Burst is one of its possible rewards.
Each vault gives each player one reward only, so you need several trial chambers. Use the mace damage calculator to see how Density and fall height add up, and the best mace enchantments for the full build.
The two curses
Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing are treasure enchantments too. They show up on random loot and librarians can sell them, but you never want them on your own gear. They are covered in Minecraft curses.
Which treasure books to chase first
Go after them in order of effort. First, Mending, because a librarian gives it in minutes. Next, Frost Walker, if you want a travel pair of boots, from the same librarians. After that, Soul Speed, once you visit the Nether with gold. Finally, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst, which need the hardest structures in the game. Meanwhile, keep every treasure book you find while fishing. Spare copies merge into higher levels later.
Worked example: max boots with treasure books
Boots take two treasure enchantments in a max build, Soul Speed and Mending, plus five more books. That makes them the hardest piece to finish. Here is the cheapest order from fresh boots and fresh books.
| Step | Left slot | Right slot | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Boots | Book (Thorns) | 12 |
| 2 | Book (Soul Speed) | Book (Mending) | 2 |
| 3 | Boots (Thorns) | Book (Soul Speed + Mending) | 16 |
| 4 | Book (Depth Strider) | Book (Unbreaking) | 3 |
| 5 | Boots (Thorns + Soul Speed + Mending) | Book (Depth Strider + Unbreaking) | 13 |
| 6 | Book (Feather Falling) | Book (Protection) | 4 |
| 7 | Boots (Thorns + Soul Speed + Mending + Depth Strider + Unbreaking) | Book (Feather Falling + Protection) | 16 |
The total comes to 66 levels, and no step goes over 16. Notice how the heavy Soul Speed book goes into an early merge, where the penalty is still small. Leggings with Swift Sneak work the same way and cost 44 levels in the best order. See the boots and leggings order pages for the steps with pictures.
Why the table never gives them
Every enchantment has a flag that says whether the enchanting table may offer it. Treasure enchantments have that flag off. So no number of bookshelves, levels or rerolls will ever show Mending or Frost Walker in the table.
Loot works differently. Enchanted books from fishing and many chests draw from a wider pool, and that pool includes most treasure enchantments. That is why a fished book can be Mending. However, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst are not part of that random pool. They only come from their own structures and from piglins.
Villagers have a separate list. Librarians can sell Mending, Frost Walker and the two curses, at double price. They can't sell the other three, which is what makes those three the rarest books in the game.
What to do with spare treasure books
- Merge them: two Soul Speed II or Swift Sneak II books make level III.
- Build a second set: a spare Frost Walker book belongs on a travel pair of boots, and a spare Mending on your backup tools.
- Keep low levels: a Swift Sneak I book is still worth keeping until you find a match.
- Share them: on a server, rare books make great trades with other players.
Finally, don't grind spare treasure books for experience. The grindstone gives back only a little XP, while a second Soul Speed or Swift Sneak book can take hours to find again. Store them in a labelled chest until a new build needs them.
Treasure checklist by item
- Boots: Mending and Soul Speed in the main pair. Add Frost Walker on a second pair if you want to walk on water.
- Leggings: Mending and Swift Sneak. Swift Sneak is the only treasure book that goes on leggings.
- Mace: Mending and Wind Burst, together with Density or Breach.
- Elytra: Mending first, because gliding drains durability every second.
- Every other item: Mending is the only treasure book you need.
So most players need just one librarian for Mending, a Nether trip for Soul Speed, an ancient city for Swift Sneak and a few trial chambers for Wind Burst. Everything else comes from the table, the anvil and ordinary librarians.
