How to use it
- Enter your current level and the level you want.
- Read off the experience points and the bottles o' enchanting it takes.
- Or enter points to see which level they make.
Good to know
- Level up from zero between anvil steps: small payments cost far fewer points than one big one.
- An XP farm (like a guardian or enderman farm) is the fastest way to stock up for enchanting.
- Dying drops at most 100 points, no matter how high your level was.

XP needed per level
Each level costs more than the last: 7 points for level 1, 37 at level 15, 112 at level 30. That is why spending levels in small steps is cheaper.
| Level | Total XP from 0 | To the next level |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7 | 9 |
| 5 | 55 | 17 |
| 10 | 160 | 27 |
| 15 | 315 | 37 |
| 16 | 352 | 42 |
| 20 | 550 | 62 |
| 25 | 910 | 87 |
| 30 | 1,395 | 112 |
| 31 | 1,507 | 121 |
| 35 | 2,045 | 157 |
| 39 | 2,727 | 193 |
| 40 | 2,920 | 202 |
| 50 | 5,345 | 292 |
For anvil work, getting from 0 to 30 takes 1,395 points but 30 to 39 takes another 1,332. The enchantment calculator shows the XP points of every order.
The formulas the calculator uses
Java uses three bands, and each one gets steeper. The tool works from these totals, so its answers match the game to the point.
- Levels 0 to 16: total points = level² + 6 × level. Going up from level L costs 2 × L + 7 points while L is 15 or lower.
- Levels 17 to 31: total = 2.5 × level² − 40.5 × level + 360. Going up from level L costs 5 × L − 38 for L from 16 to 30.
- Level 32 and up: total = 4.5 × level² − 162.5 × level + 2220. Going up from level L costs 9 × L − 158 from level 31 on.
For example, to go from level 20 to 30, the tool subtracts the totals: 1,395 − 550 = 845 points. The jump between bands shows in the step cost too: level 16 to 17 costs 42 points, but level 31 to 32 costs 121.
Why your level matters when you spend
Anvils and the enchanting table take levels, not points. But a level near the top of your bar holds far more points than one near the bottom. So the same price can cost very different amounts of farming.
For example, paying 30 levels from level 30 costs 1,395 points. Paying the same 30 levels from level 60 costs 7,275 points, because you lose levels 31 to 60 instead. In short, spend as soon as you have enough, and don't farm far past what you need.
The enchanting table is the cheap case. Its bottom option needs level 30 but takes only 3 levels, so one level 30 enchant from level 30 costs 306 points. That is about 44 bottles o' enchanting per enchant.
Where the points come from
- Bottles o' enchanting drop 3 to 11 points each, 7 on average. That is what the bottle count above uses.
- Most hostile mobs drop 5 points, so a mob farm gives steady XP while you are AFK nearby.
- Mining gives XP from coal, diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone and nether quartz ore. Iron, copper and gold give theirs when you smelt them.
- Breeding animals gives 1 to 7 points, and each catch while fishing gives 1 to 6.
- The first ender dragon kill drops 12,000 points, enough to go from 0 to about level 68.
Common mistakes
- Treating levels as equal. Level 30 to 31 costs 112 points, while level 5 to 6 costs just 17.
- Reading the bottle count as exact. Bottles drop a random 3 to 11 points, so the real number can swing either way.
- Farming to level 50 before a big anvil session. Spend in smaller chunks as you go, because each level near the top costs more.
- Counting on getting your levels back after death. You drop at most 100 points, and the rest of your bar is gone.
XP and Mending
Mending takes orbs before your XP bar does. Each point repairs 2 durability on a damaged item that has Mending. So fully repairing a netherite sword (2,031 durability) eats about 1,016 points.
If you want to level up fast, take your Mending gear off or make sure it is fully repaired. Otherwise the first orbs go into repairs. When you plan an anvil order, the prior work penalty calculator shows how many levels each step will take.
