How to use it

  1. Find the book in the table: each column is a level.
  2. The numbers are the lowest and highest emerald price a librarian can ask.
  3. Treasure books (marked ×2) cost double.

Good to know

  • Cure a zombie librarian for the biggest discount in the game.
  • Lock a good trade by trading once; the price then only changes with demand and reputation.
  • Librarians restock twice a day when they can reach their lectern.

How librarian prices work

A book costs 2 + 3 × its level emeralds, plus a random extra of up to 4 + 10 × level, capped at 64. Treasure enchantments (marked ×2: Mending, Frost Walker and the curses) cost double. Every book trade also asks for one plain book.

Discounts from curing a zombie villager or the Hero of the Village effect lower the price a lot: a cured librarian can sell Mending for a single emerald.

How to reroll a librarian

  • Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager to make a librarian, then check the first trades.
  • If you don't like them, break the lectern and place it again. As long as you never traded with it, the villager gets new trades.
  • Once you see the book you want, trade once to lock it in.
  • Swift Sneak, Soul Speed and Wind Burst can never be bought.

These librarian instructions and prices use default trades with Villager Trade Rebalance disabled. Experimental trades follow different rules.

The price formula, worked through

Take Unbreaking III. The base is 2 + 3 × 3 = 11 emeralds. The random extra runs from 0 to 4 + 10 × 3 = 34, so the price lands between 11 and 45. On average you pay about 28.

Mending has only one level, so its base is 5 and the extra runs up to 14. That gives 5 to 19, and then the treasure rule doubles it to 10–38. The average Mending book costs about 24 emeralds before any discount.

High levels run into the 64-emerald cap. Efficiency V would range from 17 to 71, so every roll above 64 sells for 64. In total, 7 book and level pairs can hit the cap, so a level V book now and then costs a full stack.

Which book a librarian offers

When a librarian gets a book trade, it picks one of the 40 tradeable enchantments, each with the same chance. Then it picks a level from I to the max, again with equal odds. So a new book trade is Mending about one time in 40.

The level roll matters for five-level books. A Sharpness or Efficiency book is level V only one time in five. If you need the top level, keep rerolling, or buy two lower books and combine them on an anvil.

Book trades can show up at four job levels: novice, apprentice, journeyman and expert. You can only reroll the novice trade, though. Later trades unlock as the villager levels up, and they stay fixed.

What moves the price after you lock it

  • Demand: if you use a trade until it runs out, the price goes up at the next restock. It drifts back down once you stop.
  • Reputation: curing a zombie villager gives a large discount. Hitting villagers does the opposite and raises your prices.
  • Hero of the Village: winning a raid gives a discount at every villager for a while.
  • No discount can push a price below 1 emerald, and the book cost in the trade never changes.

A fast reroll setup

Trap an unemployed villager in a one-block cell and place the lectern right next to it. Then check the trades, break the lectern with an axe and place it again. Each cycle takes a few seconds, so even a one-in-40 book like Mending turns up quickly.

Once the right book shows, trade once to lock it in. After that the librarian keeps its job and trades for good. For a full build with several librarians, see the trading hall guide. The Mending guide covers the other ways to find Mending.

Questions

How much does a Mending book cost?

Between 10 and 38 emeralds plus a book, before discounts.

Which enchantments can villagers not sell?

Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, Wind Burst.

Why are some books so expensive?

Higher levels cost more, and treasure enchantments cost double. A random extra is added on top, so two librarians can ask very different prices for the same book.

How do you get a Mending villager?

Reroll a novice librarian by breaking and replacing its lectern until it offers Mending. Then trade once to lock the trade in.

What is the cheapest a Mending book can be?

Without discounts, 10 emeralds and a book. Curing the librarian from a zombie villager can bring it down to 1 emerald.

Why will my librarian not change its trades?

A villager only rerolls while it has never traded. After the first trade, it keeps its job and trades even if you break the lectern.

Can librarians sell level V books?

Yes. The level is random from I to the max, so a Sharpness, Efficiency or Power book is level V about one time in five.
