The difference
Protection reduces almost every damage type by 4% per level and piece. Fire Protection reduces fire and lava damage twice as much, 8% per level and piece. It does nothing against anything else. They exclude each other on a piece.
All armor enchantments share one cap: 20 protection points, which is 80% less damage. That cap shapes the best mix, as the table below shows.
Protection vs anythingFire Protection vs fire
Level by level
| Level | Protection, one piece | Fire Protection, one piece, vs fire and lava |
|---|---|---|
| I | 1 pt · 4% | 2 pt · 8% |
| II | 2 pt · 8% | 4 pt · 16% |
| III | 3 pt · 12% | 6 pt · 24% |
| IV | 4 pt · 16% | 8 pt · 32% |
Full sets compared
| Set (all level IV) | vs fire and lava | vs everything else |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × Protection | 64% | 64% |
| 3 × Protection + 1 × Fire Protection | 80% | 48% |
| 2 × Protection + 2 × Fire Protection | 80% | 32% |
| 4 × Fire Protection | 80% | 0% |
The cap is why one Fire Protection piece is often enough. Three Protection IV pieces plus one Fire Protection IV already reach 80% against fire and lava. Everything above that is wasted, while the rest of the time you drop from 64% to 48%.
Which to pick, situation by situation
- Everyday Overworld. Protection on all four pieces. It covers mobs, falls, explosions, arrows and fire alike.
- Nether trips. Mostly Protection, plus Fire Resistance potions. Piglins, hoglins and ghasts hurt more often than lava does.
- Ancient debris mining. One Fire Protection piece is worth it. Lava pockets are common at that depth, and the cap means one piece already counts for a lot.
- Lava parkour and strider rides. A full Fire Protection set reaches the 80% cap against fire. Fire Resistance still beats it, because the potion blocks fire damage completely.
- Blaze farms. Protection is usually enough. Blazes spend most of their time shooting fireballs, and Protection reduces those too.
- PvP. Protection. Fire Aspect and Flame burns are a small share of a fight's damage.
Max build with each
Here is what a full chestplate costs with each option, books combined in the cheapest order on a fresh chestplate:
| Choice | Full build | Total levels | Most expensive step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protection | Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending | 28 | 12 |
| Fire Protection | Fire Protection IV, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, Mending | 28 | 12 |
Open the Protection build or the Fire Protection build in the calculator. The chestplate enchant order walks through every anvil step. The best chestplate enchantments page explains each book in the build.
Which items take each
- Protection goes on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. The enchanting table can offer it on all of them. Related questions: Protection on elytra, Protection on shield.
- Fire Protection goes on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. The enchanting table can offer it on all of them.
What each one does
Protection
Protection cuts almost every kind of damage: mobs, falls, fire, explosions and projectiles. Each level gives 1 protection point per armor piece, and every point removes 4% of the damage, up to the 80% cap. It is the one armor enchantment almost every build uses.
- Four pieces of Protection IV give 16 points, which is 64% less damage on top of the armor itself.
- Protection does not stack with the special types on one piece: choose Protection, Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection per piece.
- All enchantments together stop at 20 points (80%), so Feather Falling on boots still helps against falls.
Fire Protection
Fire Protection reduces fire and lava damage and makes you stop burning sooner. Each level gives 2 protection points against fire and shortens burn time by 15%.
- Useful for Nether trips and lava-heavy builds, but a Fire Resistance potion beats it outright.
- It replaces Protection on that piece, so most players put it on one piece only, or keep a separate Nether set.
Where to get them and what they cost
- Protection: max level IV, from the enchanting table, librarian villagers, gear worn by trial chamber mobs and enchanted loot from fishing and chests. Once you have one, a max book costs 4 levels on a fresh item.
- Fire Protection: max level IV, from the enchanting table, librarian villagers, gear worn by trial chamber mobs and enchanted loot from fishing and chests. Once you have one, a max book costs 4 levels on a fresh item.
They are incompatible, so you choose one per item. Both can go on the helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. Whichever you pick, combine the books in the cheapest order with the enchantment calculator or follow the helmet enchant order.
Good to know
Fire Protection still has a use away from lava. Against fire it gives twice the protection of Protection, 8% per level and piece. That helps against Fire Aspect swords and Flame arrows, even though Protection covers their damage too.
For a lava-heavy job, though, a Fire Resistance potion is the better tool. It blocks fire and lava damage completely for its whole duration.
Common mistakes
- A full Fire Protection set for the Nether. Most Nether damage comes from mobs. So a full Fire Protection set leaves you open to piglins and hoglins.
- Stacking past the cap. Above 20 points, more protection does nothing. Next to three Protection IV pieces, a second Fire Protection piece adds nothing against fire.
- Forgetting Feather Falling. Feather Falling is not a protection type, so it fits on boots with either one.
Switching from one to the other
An anvil never swaps Protection for Fire Protection. If the book only holds the conflicting enchantment, the anvil has nothing to add. So the only way to switch on the same item is a grindstone. It strips every enchantment except curses, then you enchant the item again from scratch.
Because Protection and Fire Protection can't share a piece, a swap means a grindstone. Most players keep one spare Fire Protection piece instead.
Java and Bedrock differences
In Bedrock 26.60, Protection and Fire Protection are incompatible. The anvil differs between the editions. Bedrock only charges for the levels a book adds and nothing for a conflicting enchantment it skips. Commands work differently too: Bedrock's /give can't add enchantments, so you hold the item and run /enchant once per enchantment. This page shows the Bedrock 26.60 numbers.
Questions
Is Fire Protection better than Protection in the Nether?
Only against fire and lava. Most Nether damage is still mobs, so many players keep Protection and bring Fire Resistance potions.
Do Protection and Fire Protection stack?
Not on one piece, because they are mutually exclusive. Across different pieces they add up, up to the shared cap of 20 points.
How much Fire Protection do you need for lava?
With Protection IV on three pieces, one Fire Protection IV piece already reaches the 80% cap against fire.
Does Protection reduce lava damage?
Yes. Protection covers fire and lava too, at half the rate of Fire Protection.
Does Fire Protection stop you from burning?
It shortens how long you burn, but it does not stop fire. Only a Fire Resistance potion makes you immune to fire and lava.
